So what is Shulbok? We think it’s just a game… based on the traditional Dutch shuffleboard game called “Sjoelbak”. It was popular in the Netherlands for several hundred years, and still is, with a rich heritage through time in places like Belgium, Germany, and of course England (the birthplace of shuffleboard).
The history of Shulbok, and all forms of shuffleboard for that matter, is a colorful one. So go ahead and read all about it here if you’re into that sort of thing. And we hope you are.
Our handcrafted American version of the game has been in the works for about 20 years, with roots that trace back to the Amsterdam Café in Auburn, Alabama. As with any over-night sensation, there were skips and jumps in the evolution of the model we now call the “Stowaway”. This hand-crafted portable version of the original table models have proven to be a hit in almost all environments (coast to coast and pole to pole, almost) and with a very diverse crowd. Development of the game through the years has focused on the “anyone can play anywhere” model, with “have you ever seen a cooler wedding gift” in mind.
So a few of us have decided to give it a go and try to save this game, literally. On film that is, and not just any old film and not just any old game. It’s a documentary of sorts, but we call it the shulblog. Check it out in your copious free time, or at least when you’re not playing Shulbok, or out saving the world.
